Most people smoke using rolling papers, but there are plenty of people out there who prefer to smoke bongs. Lots of people think that they are easier to use, cleaner, and in a lot of cases, they get you higher faster.
If you are new to smoking or you’ve just never used a bong before, using one for the first time can seem very complicated and confusing. However, this isn’t the case at all! Using a bong is incredibly straightforward, and once you get the method down, it’ll become second nature to you.
We’re going to go over how to use a bong, so you can try it out for yourself.
How To Use A Bong
There are three important steps when it comes to using a bong and those steps come in the form of preparing the bong, lighting the bong, and inhaling the smoke of the weed.
Each step has some key things you need to remember, but we are going to cover everything here, so don’t worry if this is your first time!
Part 1: Preparing The Bong
Preparing your bong correctly includes filling it with water and packing the bong bowl with weed. So let’s go over those steps first.
Step 1: Fill The Bong With Water
You can use bottled water or tap water for this step, it doesn’t really matter!
The amount of water will vary depending on the size of your bong, but you typically want the water to be no more than 1 inch (2.54 cm) above the tip of the downstem. The downstem is the long tube of glass that sticks to the bong.
When it comes to filling the bong, you just need to pour the water directly into the mouthpiece.
Step 2: Grind Up Your Weed & Pack It In The Bong Bowl
Next, you will need to grind up your weed and then pack it into the bowl of your bong. Before you pack it, you’ll need to grind it and this is a really easy process.
You can use your fingers, a grinder, or some scissors, whatever works best for you. You just need to make sure that is ground up finely, as this will make it easier to smoke later.
After you’ve ground the weed up, you will need to pack it into the bong bowl. If you have never used a bong before, the bowl can be found in the funnel-shaped piece that is in the outside portion of the downstem.
Pinch the ground weed with your fingers and gradually add it to the bowl. Make sure you don’t pack it too tightly, because this will make it harder to smoke.
Part 2: Lighting The Bong
With your bong prepped and packed, you can now move on to this step.
If you are new to smoking bongs, it’s in your best interest to sit down and have a surface on which you can place the bong, because it’s likely that you will need to cough after you’ve inhaled.
Step 1: Get Comfortable
Whether you are new to smoking bongs or you have been smoking them for a while, it’s always important to get comfortable before you start smoking.
Along with having a flat surface nearby, make sure that you have an open window nearby to get rid of the smoke, and make sure there are no flammable objects close by.
Step 2: Hold The Bong In Your Non-Dominant Hand
Using that hand, hold the bong around the smoke chamber (the long section) or hold the very bottom of the bong. Play around with both to see which one is more comfortable for you.
Before you light it, make sure you have a firm and steady grip.
Step 3: Take Deep Breaths
Breathe through your diaphragm and allow your lungs to fill with oxygen. These deep breaths will make it easier for you to inhale the smoke from the bong, and you won’t cough as much.
Step 4: Put Your Mouth On The Mouthpieces
To make sure you’re doing this step correctly, you need to make sure that your lips are inside the mouthpiece, and the rim of the mouthpiece needs to be pressed against the area around your mouth.
Make sure there are no gaps between your mouth and the mouthpiece as well.
Step 5: Light The Bowl & Tilt It On The Side
A regular lighter will work fine for this and you just need to hold the lighter vertically and light it with your thumb.
While you are doing this, tilt the lighter on its side and bring the flame to the bong bowl. You want to make sure that you are only burning the edge of the weed in the bowl. This helps the weed last longer.
Part 3: Inhaling
The final part involves inhaling while you are lighting the bong. So you will do this at the same time as you do part.
Step 1: Inhale Slowly
While you’re lighting the bowl, start inhaling through the mouthpiece slowly. You shouldn’t be inhaling it into your mouth and lungs straight away, but instead, you should just be drawing the smoke up the smoke chamber.
Step 2: Stop Lighting The Bowl & Pull Out The Bowl
When you are satisfied with the amount of smoke, stop lighting the bowl. Set the lighter aside and hold the bong with both hands. Stop inhaling, but don’t remove your mouth from the mouthpiece yet.
Once you have done this, pull out the bowl and start inhaling the smoke.
Step 3: Inhale & Hold The Smoke In Your Lungs
As you are inhaling, make sure that you do so deeply, so it goes into your lungs. Hold the smoke for a few seconds, about 2 to 3 is the best amount of time.
Step 4: Exhale
Finally, exhale the smoke and then place the bowl back into the stem.
